Rotary Tool Sanding and Polishing Attachment

Abstract

A rotary tool sanding and polishing attachment for sanding and polishing includes a shaft that is elongated and has a plurality of longitudinal faces. A plurality of supports is coupled to and extends outwardly from the shaft. The plurality of supports comprises a pair of closely spaced supports. A drum is coupled to and extends from one of the pair of closely spaced supports to the other of the pair of closely spaced supports, such that a longitudinal gap in the drum is defined by the pair of closely spaced supports. The attachment includes an arm, which is complimentary to a channel that extends from proximate to a second end of the shaft to proximate to the supports, secured via a pivot hole in the shaft and a pivot pin. A wedge, complimentary to the longitudinal gap, is coupled to a second terminus of the arm.

Claims



1. A rotary tool sanding and polishing attachment comprising: a shaft, said shaft being elongated with a plurality of longitudinal faces; a plurality of supports, each of said supports being coupled to and extending outwardly from said shaft, said plurality of supports comprising a pair of closely spaced supports; a drum, said drum being coupled to and extending from one of said pair of closely spaced supports to the other of said pair of closely spaced supports, wherein a longitudinal gap in said drum is defined by said pair of closely spaced supports; a channel, said channel extending from proximate to said second end of said shaft to proximate to said supports; a pivot hole, said pivot hole bisecting said channel proximate to said second end of said shaft; an arm, said arm being complimentary to said channel, said arm having a penetration proximate to a first terminus, said penetration being complimentary to said pivot hole; a pivot pin, said pivot pin being complimentary to said pivot hole and said penetration in said arm, wherein said pivot pin is positionable in said pivot hole and said penetration such that said arm is pivotally retained in alignment with said channel; a wedge, said wedge being coupled to a second terminus of said arm, said wedge being complimentary to said longitudinal gap; and a rod, said rod being cylindrical and having a first base, said first base being coupled to said second end of said shaft.

2. The device of claim 1, further including said plurality of longitudinal faces comprising six faces, such that said shaft is complimentary to the chucks utilized on rotary tools.

The device of claim 1, further comprising: each of said supports extending from a first end of said shaft toward a second end of said shaft; and said plurality of supports comprising a pair of supports positioned at 180 degrees on said shaft, a third support bisecting said pair of supports, and said pair of closely spaced supports being positioned approximately opposite said third support.

3. The device of claim 1, further including said drum being coupled to each of said plurality of supports.

4. The device of claim 1, further including said drum comprising an interior layer bonded to an exterior layer, said interior layer being rigid, said exterior layer being pliant, said exterior layer comprising sponge.

5. The device of claim 4, further including said exterior layer comprising rubber sponge.

6. The device of claim 1, further including said pivot hole being positioned in a pair of opposing faces of said shaft.

The device of claim 1, further including a lock, said lock being coupled proximate to said second end of said shaft, said lock comprising: a pin, said pin being positioned in said rod proximate to said first base, said pin being spring loaded, such that the default position for said pin is extending from said rod; a stop, said stop being coupled to said rod proximate to said second base; a sleeve, said sleeve being complimentary to said rod, said sleeve being positioned over said rod such that said stop engages said sleeve to prevent said sleeve from being removable from said rod, and wherein said sleeve is positionable over said shaft when said pin is depressed by the user and when said arm is positioned in said channel, such that said pin upon release will extend from said rod and lock said sleeve over said shaft, thus retaining said arm in said channel and said wedge in said longitudinal gap; and a shank, said shank being hexagonally shaped and coupled to a second base of said rod.

8. The device of claim 7, further including said stop comprising a circular extrusion protruding from said rod.

The device of claim 1, further including a lock, said lock comprising: a bar coupled proximate to said first terminus of said arm, said bar extending perpendicularly from said arm; a plurality of teeth positioned on said bar, said teeth being configured to selectively couple to a latch as said bar is motivated through a recess in said rod, said latch being spring loaded; a release pin operationally coupled to said latch; and wherein each said tooth is positioned to couple to said latch such that said arm is lockable with said wedge secured in said longitudinal gap, and wherein said release pin is positioned to motivate said teeth to decouple from said latch to release said wedge.

A rotary tool sanding and polishing attachment comprising: a shaft, said shaft being elongated with a plurality of longitudinal faces, said plurality of longitudinal faces comprising six faces, such that said shaft is complimentary to the chucks utilized on rotary tools; a plurality of supports, each of said supports being coupled to and extending outwardly from said shaft, said plurality of supports comprising a pair of closely spaced supports, each of said supports extending from a first end of said shaft toward a second end of said shaft, said plurality of supports comprising a pair of supports positioned at 180 degrees on said shaft, a third support bisecting said pair of supports, and said pair of closely spaced supports being positioned approximately opposite said third support; a drum, said drum being coupled to and extending from one of said pair of closely spaced supports to the other of said pair of closely spaced supports, wherein a longitudinal gap in said drum is defined by said pair of closely spaced supports, said drum being coupled to each of said plurality of supports, said drum comprising an interior layer bonded to an exterior layer, said interior layer being rigid, said exterior layer being pliant, said exterior layer comprising sponge, said exterior layer comprising rubber sponge; a channel, said channel extending from proximate to said second end of said shaft to proximate to said supports; a pivot hole, said pivot hole bisecting said channel proximate to said second end of said shaft, said pivot hole being positioned in a pair of opposing faces of said shaft; an arm, said arm being complimentary to said channel, said arm having a penetration proximate to a first terminus, said penetration being complimentary to said pivot hole; a pivot pin, said pivot pin being complimentary to said pivot hole and said penetration in said arm, wherein said pivot pin is positionable in said pivot hole and said penetration such that said arm is pivotally retained in alignment with said channel; a wedge, said wedge being coupled to a second terminus of said arm, said wedge being complimentary to said longitudinal gap; a rod, said rod being cylindrical and having a first base, said first base being coupled to said second end of said shaft; a lock, said lock being configured to secure said arm in said channel, such that said wedge is secured in said longitudinal gap, said lock comprising: a pin, said pin being positioned in said rod proximate to said first base, said pin being spring loaded, such that the default position for said pin is extending from said rod, a stop, said stop being coupled to said rod proximate to said second base, said stop comprising a circular extrusion protruding from said rod, and a sleeve, said sleeve being complimentary to said rod, said sleeve being positioned over said rod such that said stop engages said sleeve to prevent said sleeve from being removable from said rod, and wherein said sleeve is positionable over said shaft when said pin is depressed by the user and when said arm is positioned in said channel, such that said pin upon release will extend from said rod and lock said sleeve over said shaft, thus retaining said arm in said channel and said wedge in said longitudinal gap; a shank, said shank being hexagonally shaped and coupled to a second base of said rod; and wherein said longitudinal gap is positioned in said drum such that a polishing or sanding cloth or paper can be positioned by the user with the ends of the cloth or paper extending into said longitudinal gap, and said wedge is positioned on said arm such that said wedge when pivoted into said longitudinal gap will engage and retain the cloth or paper on said drum, and wherein said arm will be retained in said channel by the chuck of the rotary tool.

The attachment of claim 10, further including said lock comprising: a bar coupled proximate to said first terminus of said arm, said bar extending perpendicularly from said arm; a plurality of teeth positioned on said bar, said teeth being configured to selectively couple to a latch as said bar is motivated through a recess in said rod, said latch being spring loaded; a release pin operationally coupled to said latch; and wherein each said tooth is positioned to couple to said latch such that said arm is lockable with said wedge secured in said longitudinal gap, and wherein said release pin is positioned to motivate said teeth to decouple from said latch to release said wedge,

BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE

Field of the Disclosure

[0001] The disclosure relates to rotary tool attachments and more particularly pertains to a new rotary tool attachment for sanding and polishing.

SUMMARY OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0002] An embodiment of the disclosure meets the needs presented above by generally comprising a shaft that is elongated and has a plurality of longitudinal faces. A plurality of supports is coupled to and extends outwardly from the shaft. The plurality of supports comprises a pair of closely spaced supports. A drum is coupled to and extends from one of the pair of closely spaced supports to the other of the pair of closely spaced supports, such that a longitudinal gap in the drum is defined by the pair of closely spaced supports. The attachment includes an arm, which is complimentary to a channel that extends from proximate to a second end of the shaft to proximate to the supports, secured via a pivot hole in the shaft and a pivot pin. A wedge, complimentary to the longitudinal gap, is coupled to a second terminus of the arm.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

[0012] With reference now to the drawings, and in particular to FIGS. 1 through 5 thereof, a new rotary tool attachment embodying the principles and concepts of an embodiment of the disclosure and generally designated by the reference numeral 10 will be described.

[0013] As best illustrated in FIGS. 1 through 5, the rotary tool sanding and polishing attachment 10 generally comprises a shaft 12 that is elongated with a plurality of longitudinal faces 14. The plurality of longitudinal faces 14 comprises six faces, such that the shaft 12 is complimentary to the chucks utilized on rotary tools. Each of a plurality of supports 16 is coupled to and extends outwardly from the shaft 12. The plurality of supports 16 comprises a pair of closely spaced supports 18. Each of the supports 16 extends from a first end 20 of the shaft 12 toward a second end 22 of the shaft 12. The plurality of supports 16 comprises a pair of supports 24 positioned at 180 degrees on the shaft 12, a third support 26 bisecting the pair of supports 24, and the pair of closely spaced supports 18 positioned approximately opposite the third support 26.

[0014] A drum 28 is coupled to and extends from one of the pair of closely spaced supports 18 to the other of the pair of closely spaced supports 18, such that a longitudinal gap 30 in the drum 28 is defined by the pair of closely spaced supports 18. The drum 28 is coupled to each of the plurality of supports 16. The drum 28 comprises an interior layer 32 bonded to an exterior layer 34. The interior layer 32 is rigid, while the exterior layer 34 is pliant. The exterior layer 34 comprises sponge, preferably rubber sponge.

[0015] A channel 36 extends from proximate to the second end 22 of the shaft 12 to proximate to the supports 16. A pivot hole 38 bisects the channel 36 proximate to the second end 22 of the shaft 12. The pivot hole 38 is positioned in a pair of opposing faces 40 of the shaft 12. An arm 42 that is complimentary to the channel 36 has a penetration 44 proximate to a first terminus 46. The penetration 44 is complimentary to the pivot hole 38. A pivot pin 48 that is complimentary to the pivot hole 38 and the penetration 44 in the arm 42 is positioned in the pivot hole 38 and the penetration 44, such that the arm 42 is pivotally retained in alignment with the channel 36. A wedge 50 is coupled to a second terminus 52 of the arm 42. The wedge 50 is complimentary to the longitudinal gap 30.

[0016] The attachment 10 may comprise a lock 53. The lock 53 is configured to secure the arm 42 in the channel 36, such that the wedge 50 is secured in the longitudinal gap 30. A rod 54, which is cylindrical, has a first base 56 coupled to the second end 22 of the shaft 12. In one embodiment of the invention, the lock 53 comprises a pin 58, a stop 60 and a sleeve 66. The pin 58 is positioned in the rod 54 proximate to the first base 56. The pin 58 is spring loaded, such that the default position for the pin 58 is extending from the rod 12. The stop 60 is coupled to the rod 54 proximate to a second base 62 of the rod 54. The stop 60 comprises a circular extrusion 64 protruding from the rod 54. The sleeve 66 that is complimentary to the rod 54 is positioned over the rod 54. A shank 68 is coupled to the second base 62 for coupling the attachment 10 to a rotary tool.

[0017] In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the lock 53 comprises a bar 70 coupled proximate to the first terminus 46 of the arm 42 and extending perpendicularly from the arm 42. The bar 70 comprises a plurality of teeth 72 positioned to selectively couple to a latch 74 as the bar 70 is motivated through a recess 76 in the rod 54. The latch 74 is spring loaded. Each tooth 72 is positioned to couple to the latch 74 such that the arm 42 is lockable with the wedge 50 secured in the longitudinal gap 30. A release pin 78 is operationally coupled to the latch 74, such that the teeth 72 are decouplable from the latch 74.

[0018] In use, the longitudinal gap 30 is positioned in the drum 28 such that a polishing or sanding cloth or paper can be positioned by the user with the ends of the cloth or paper extending into the longitudinal gap 30. The wedge 50 is positioned on the arm 42 such that the wedge 50, when pivoted into the longitudinal gap 30, will engage and retain the cloth or paper on the drum 28. The bar 70 is motivated through the recess 76 as the arm 42 is pivoted, such that the teeth 72 selectively couple to the latch 74, thus retaining the arm 42 in the channel 36 and the wedge 50 in the longitudinal gap 30. Therein, attachment 10 is configured for coupling to a rotary tool using the shank 68.

[0019] With respect to the above description then, it is to be realized that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of an embodiment enabled by the disclosure, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by an embodiment of the disclosure.

Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the disclosure to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the disclosure. In this patent document, the word "comprising" is used in its non-limiting sense to mean that items following the word are included, but items not specifically mentioned are not excluded. A reference to an element by the indefinite article "a" does not exclude the possibility that more than one of the element is present, unless the context clearly requires that there be only one of the elements.
